The Italian branch of NatPower – an independent developer for renewable energy projects with a pipeline of more than 23GW worldwide – announces that, through the company “Zharyk Su”, it has been awarded the tender called by the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the development of a hydroelectric power plant on the Bartogai reservoir, located in the Shelek River in the Almaty region.

03 January 2024 – The project, designed and developed by the Italian NatPower team, involves an investment of EUR 40 million guaranteed by a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Kazakh government, at a guaranteed, agreed and annually indexed tariff.

The power plant will have an installed capacity of 33 MW and an estimated annual production of 150 GWh, an output fulfilling the average energy requirements of 50,000 families per year. The project is part of a broader plan to develop a series of hydroelectric power plants with a total installed capacity of 206 MW.

“This project will be an important boost for the Almaty region by effectively addressing a critical supply issue affecting the entire area,” comments Fabrizio Zago, CEO NatPower. “Our Italian team boasts long-standing experience in renewable projects in Kazakhstan and in this part of the world, allowing us to be one of a select group of partners identified by the Kazakh government to develop over 30 MW of a tender totalling more than 200 MW of hydroelectric energy. An outcome we proudly regard as authentically Italian, since it draws on the Italian technology and design of a renowned company like Scotta.”

Indeed, the project leverages the expertise of NatPower’s Italian development team and the cutting-edge technologies of Scotta S.p.A., a leading Italian company specialising in the design and production of state-of-the-art hydroelectric turbines, alongside the construction of highly automated power plants.

This project marks an important step towards ensuring a sustainable energy supply in Kazakhstan by harnessing the water resources of the Bartogai reservoir to produce clean and renewable energy. The hydroelectric power plant will operate in line with the seasonal flows of the reservoir, ensuring a minimal impact on the environment and preserving water for agricultural purposes.

Construction of the plant is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2024 and is expected to take two years. The project has been granted a 40-year lease agreement.

Through this project, NatPower reaffirms its international leadership in the renewable energy market and strengthens its foothold in the Kazakh market, where it is actively pursuing the development of photovoltaic projects totalling 1 GW.
