Genevos, a leading hydrogen fuel cell power systems integrator, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) with NatPower H, part of NatPower Group, developing the world’s first global, large-scale network of green hydrogen refuelling stations for the maritime sector. The collaboration will see the delivery of a turnkey solution for ports, operators, and integrators to support the transition to hydrogen-powered vessels.

Milan, 18 September 2024 – The maritime sector contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions, with international shipping alone responsible for an estimated 3%. In addition to this negative impact on climate change, loud vibrating engines and motors further disrupt vital communication and behaviour patterns among marine species, jeopardizing entire ecosystems.

The Genevos clean hydrogen power solution is based on fuel cell technology operating via a chemical exchange enabling zero vibration and very low sound when motoring. Both hydrogen and fuel cells have been identified as an important solution to decarbonise this sector, where infrastructure and power technologies are fundamental to its deployment.

This partnership aims to make rapid positive change in accelerating the sector’s shift to clean hydrogen by focusing on three key deliverables: access to hydrogen refuelling and plug-and-play marine fuel cell power systems for vessels; access to a world-first hydrogen vessel configurator tool; and specialist technical contributions to the development of EU Marine Directives for hydrogen installations.

The two innovative companies have joined forces to deploy this important task with NatPower H missioned to install 100 refuelling stations by 2030, and Genevos to roll-out mass production of compact and efficient hydrogen fuel cell systems for vessels. These Hydrogen Power Modules (HPMs) developed by Genevos, will be supplied as marine certified, ensuring a safe and simple solution for integrators and operators.

In this game-changing partnership the duo will go further to support stakeholders through the development of a hydrogen vessel configurator, made available online, enabling ports, shipyards and vessel operators to immediately identify key requirements, including CAPEX and OPEX.

The final step will see the development of industry hydrogen standards with the partners exchanging technical information to optimise vessel refuelling solutions to define a standardised process, developing standards for EU Marine Directives for hydrogen installations.

This collaboration falls in line with the strong advances in emissions regulations, and the building environmental pressure to reduce underwater noise, vibration and pollution for the protection of marine life.

“Our partnership with Genevos marks a significant step forward in the yachting industry’s transition to clean energy. Together, we will leverage our combined expertise to develop and implement innovative hydrogen solutions that offer tangible benefits to the yachting sector. By embracing hydrogen as a sustainable fuel source, we are not only addressing the urgent need for decarbonization but also paving the way for a more environmentally friendly and sustainable future for yachting” Andrea Minerdo, CEO of NatPower H.

“This ground-breaking partnership responds directly to the mandatory need for the boat industry to decarbonise, offering a sustainable pathway to make zero emissions vessels a reality.” Commented Rebecca Sharp, CEO of Genevos.
